Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he loved betting on various card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in the above-mentioned card games while competing against his father. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little bit and moved to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he played extensive hours and lose most times. He made some additional money by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he could boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus attention even more on poker.

The actual advancement in his game happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would often compete against one another. Howard was able to access a number of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his strategic thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of No-Limit hold’em.

Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. He told Annie to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the best female players the poker arena ever. Howard moved to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the following 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
