Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he liked betting on numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to compete in some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he would play extensive hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he might better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus attention more on poker.

The actual advancement in his game began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would often challenge each other. Howard was able to access some of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would hone his logical thinking skills. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit hold’em.

He also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. He told Annie to move out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the best female players the poker arena ever. He headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the following decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
